ISCV cleaning & air cleaner element replacement, GD-TV2

SUBARU SAMBER

The engine of my GD-TV2 wouldn’t start as soon as I brought it home, but now it starts only when the temperature is high.
It starts during the day when the sun is shining brightly, but it won’t start on rainy, cold days or in the mornings and evenings.
Even when it starts, the idling is a little unstable and it will sometimes stall out.

I imagine that the idle speed control valve (ISCV) is probably clogged with dirt and unable to control the idling.

So, it’s time to clean the ISCV.
The ISCV is in the centre of the photo.

I disconnected the black connector, loosened and removed the two screws, and pulled out the ISCV.

Sure enough, there was a sticky black oil inside

This is the tip of the ISCV.
As expected, it is dirty.

I cleaned the ISCV with carb cleaner.

I also cleaned the inside of the ISCV tube with carb cleaner.

Judging from how dirty the ISCV was, I suspected that oil might have gotten into the intake system due to blow-by gas reduction, so I took a look at the air cleaner.

It was indeed extremely dirty.
The air element was soaked in so much oil that I wondered if it was a wet type. It seemed like even the dust and dirt was stuck to it with oil.
I guess I was actually lucky that the engine still started… (^_^;)

The inside of the air cleaner box was also extremely dirty.

I cleaned the box with carb cleaner, and while I was there I also sprayed some carb cleaner into the intake manifold around the throttle.

I replaced the air element with a new one.

Here it is, reassembled after cleaning.

I tried turning the starter to start the engine, but it seemed the spark plug had become covered in carb cleaner and it wouldn’t start.
